Ever Heard of Google Panda?

September 1, 2011 in General

Ever heard of Google Panda?  If you haven’t it’s a pretty big deal in the online world.  In Feb 2011 Google released a major update to its search algorithm by adding new ranking factors in an effort to improve the quality of its search results.  The name for this new release is Google Panda.  While there are many variables to Google search rankings, one of Panda’s objectives is to assign more weight to websites based on monthly traffic, quality of content, and the presence of an active community around the site.

At the end of the day, Google’s release of Panda is their reaction to the fact that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) firms and specialists had figured out how to manipulate the old algorithm.  One of the most popular methods was to use large amounts of low quality, often redundant content catered to Google’s search scheme.   These websites, also known as Content Farms, fashioned their keywords and text to focus on specific search terms resulting in high search rankings on Google (regardless of quality content and amount of meaningful and useful  information).  The result for Google users was an abundance of low quality search results with high rankings.

So what does this mean for the small business owner trying to effectively market and drive traffic to their website?  It means that some of the traditional SEO tactics may not only no longer be effective, but actually now hurt search ranking.  Panda is focusing on quality over quantity.  Where it used to be beneficial to have a lot of text (even if shallow) and a lot of inbound links (even if from irrelevant and/or low quality sites), it’s now more important for text and links to offer in depth and insightful information.

In addition Panda is now placing more weight to the basic quality of a site.  Factors Panda looks at to determine quality are:

  • Clean design
  • Ease of navigation
  • Professional, proofread copy
  • Informative content and resources
  • Reputable products and services

Panda is also placing more weight on the presence of an active community surrounding a site.  This translates to integration of social media such as:

  • Blogs
  • FaceBook
  • Twitter
  • Etc.

This is where Revelle Designed excels.  Our primary concern is  to first give the client what they want in terms of look, feel and layout.  We believe that for a customer’s site to be effective, the site must communicate our customers’ excitement, passion and pride in their company.  Second, our expertise lies in working with our clients to present their vision and message in a contemporary, clean, and well laid out style that instills confidence in their target audience.  To further this goal, we offer social media integration to keep our clients connected to their community of current and potential customers.  And finally all of our sites include a solid foundation for Search Engine Optimization that is necessary for more advanced online marketing strategies.

Panda is ever evolving with regular updates from Google.  So even though Panda represents a significant change to the rules, the game is still the same… the constant search from online marketers to figure out what Google likes today.  Additional information on Google Panda and how to adjust your SEO strategy accordingly can be found on Wordtracker.com.

Confused About PMS? Revelle Designed can help!

August 10, 2011 in General, Printing Terms

When it comes to printing, PMS is a good thing!  When that time of the month rolls around for your business’s next printing project, consider the benefits of the Pantone Matching System (PMS) printing method.  Other print methods include CMYK (also known as 4 Color and Process Color printing) and Digital printing, but depending on your needs PMS can be your best option.

What is PMS (Pantone Matching System)?

PMS is a proprietary, standardized color reproduction system used primarily by the printing industry for specifying colors and printer’s recipes for mixing inks from base pigments.  This standardization allows different designers and printers  to refer to the Pantone System to better ensure  consistent color matching.  PMS offers 1,114 unique colors produced by mixing 13 base pigments in various amounts.

Why use PMS Printing?

Color Consistency – PMS helps to ensures that your colors will print consistently.  This is important with branding and marketing.  Consider a company like Coca-Cola and the importance of maintaining a consistent “Red” across their branding and marketing portfolio.  In addition, when producing multiple printed marketing pieces, it is important that your company colors are maintained.  For example consider the importance of your logo/company colors being consistent across business cards, stationary, brochures, flyers, direct mailers,  etc.  PMS printing also helps maintain consistency when using multiple printers and suppliers for printed materials.

Color Quality and Detail – PMS offers the rich colors and sharp details.

Cost Effective – Often a more cost effective solution when printing fewer than 4 colors.

PMS Color Guides – Pantone releases color swatch books that display color as printed.  PMS swatch books also give information on other color system equivalents such as CMYK and RGB.

PMS Limitations

Most cost effective when using fewer than 4 colors

Cannot reproduce full color images like photographs

Tips

Keep in mind that while PMS helps ensure the consistency of the ink color, the media you are printing on can still effect the end result.  The color, texture and finish of the paper/media can change the color presentation.  For best results consult your designer and/or printer for advice on best practices.

Business Card for Practice Adminstrator

April 15, 2010 in Design Business Cards

I honestly can say  I don’t think there is a harder job than being a Practice Administrator for an independent medical practice.  Talk about wearing many hats!  Revelle Designed is fortunate to work with many medical clients here in St. Augustine and without exception the Practice Administrators’ plates overfloweth.  I’m sure I’m leaving some things out but a short list of duties includes HR, AR/AP, Operations, Payroll, IT, Marketing… and most importantly keeping the doctors happy:-)

Christy Creech is no exception, in fact she may set the bar.  Christy is practice administrator for a group that includes (4) different practices.  This created a unique design challenge for Revelle Designed because Christy needed a business card that clearly presents multiple practice names, physician names, website addresses, and email addresses.  Additional design concerns included making sure to represent the different practices’ logos and colors.  And Revelle Designed always focuses on keeping printing costs low while using earth friendly processes and materials.

Take a look below at the finished product.  I think Monique did a great job designing this card to clearly convey a lot of information in a limited space.   Please let us know your thoughts and feel free to ask any questions.

Resort Rentals keychain design

April 15, 2010 in Design Specialty Items

We recently completed redesigning key chains for Resort Rentals of St. Augustine.

First let me say that Resort Rentals is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to vacation or purchase a vacation property in St. Augustine Beach, FL.  It is truly a pleasure working with them.

Key chains are a great marketing tool and in this case they also serve a core function for the company.  Resort Rentals puts all of their rental keys on these key chains for their customers.  They  were running low on their current design (red heart to the left) and asked Revelled Designed for ideas on a change.  They did not want to increase the budget, but did want to update the look and information to more closely match their branding.

Revelle Designed researched printing, color options, and materials and we succeeded in finding an option that met their needs without increasing the cost. Their new keychain design (palm tree to the right) is a great match for their newly redesigned website: www.florida-resort-rentals.com.

This was not a big project, but it is a good example of the down to earth value Revelle Designed offers our clients.  If you have never taken a peek into the world of commercial, promotional doo-dads, look out!  There are literally thousands of options for key chains alone.  But rather than get bogged down, we listened to our client, stayed within budget and provided an improved solution.  What we did not do is waste our client’s time by showing them options they didn’t request and try to talk them into expanding the project’s scope and budget.  The final result was a satisfied client!
